Oh man. How bitchy is this? If you are offended by an email, either don't respond, or send an email saying that you don't appreciate the tone of the email, something. Whatever. Solve the friggin' problem for yourself!
Professors have to realize that people are not stupid. And they're paying MASSIVE amounts of money for school. From the article: "While once professors may have expected deference, their expertise seems to have become just another service that students, as consumers, are buying." Duh.
And while, no, I don't think that a professor should answer emails that say, "By the way, I'll miss class today," or "I missed yesterday's class; can I get the notes?"--Actually, I take that back. Professors shouldn't answer "I will miss class". They should, I think, answer questions like "can I get the notes?" with emails like, "Everyone else took their own notes. You should too. You friggin' idiot."
When I learned about Cornel West (in Moral Dilemmas class), there was a clear bias towards "Larry Summers is a horrible human being". And that was all that I heard about him from the media, too. And yet, the more I read about him, now that he's quit Harvard, the more I think that, okay, maybe he wasn't the best for the job, but he should have been cut some slack. Gray area, people. Gray freaking area.
EDIT: Changed a typo--"to" to "too".
